We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are the Word of God written and contain all things necessary for salvation; the three historic Creeds (Apostles’ Creed, Nicene Creed, and Athanasian Creed) contain the summary of the Christian faith; and the decisions of the Seven Ecumenical Councils of the undivided Church instruct us in a right understanding of worship, Christian behavior, and correct belief about the person and nature of Jesus. Our founding theology is explained in the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion, found in the Book of Common Prayer.

Geoffrey Fisher, 99th Archbishop of Canterbury, once said about the Anglican Church, “We have no doctrine of our own—we only possess the catholic doctrine of the catholic Church enshrined in the catholic creeds, and those creeds we hold without addition or diminution. We stand firm on that rock.”

Anglicanism is best described as reformed catholicism, taking the best from catholic tradition of the Western Church strengthened by the scriptural emphasis of the Reformation. We believe that the church is in need of continual renewal and reformation, but must always be grounded in the central mysteries of the Christian faith.
